Maxwell, or Maxie, as he was affectionately called, was my 11-year-old Greyhound. He was from Florida until he reached the ripe old age of eighteen months, when I adopted him.  I JUST found out that he NEVER raced as "CASINO TALK" (his former-life name); hence his early retirement!  Sometimes it pays be a flower child - he got to enjoy the good life!

Max gets his first "feel" of the Barnegat Bay!

This was Max's first experience with The Barnegat Bay. He wasn't real sure about this "water" thing, and when the sand started sucking down his paws, well.....he just wasn't going to let that happen, so he decided to sit, and was REALLY surprised!
Here's Maxwell visiting WOBM-FM, a regional radio station based in Berkeley Township, NJ.
Maxie poses with his favorite deejay!
Maxwell got to see the Waretown Founders Day fireworks from aboard a boat on the Barnegat Bay!

Max met Smokey Bear at the Annual Pine Barrens Jamboree in Waretown, NJ. Max the Piney Hound visited the Jamboree many times, and became a "regular" at the Ocean County Parks booth!

Max trots along the Point Pleasant Boardwalk, happily showing his new shirt off!
On October 17, 1999, thousands of caring people got together in Point Pleasant, NJ for the Annual "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" 5-Mile Walk. Maxwell had enough sponsors of his own to earn the tee-shirt he proudly wore during the walk along the beautiful boardwalk and streets in lovely Point Pleasant.
He made some great friends there, too. He poses with one just after crossing the finish line! He was ready for a nap!
Max poses with a new friend right after he crosses the finish line!
Max was sorry to leave the company of these young ladies, who also walked the 5 miles to help raise money towards the cure of breast cancer
Max was reluctant to leave all the new friends he met!
November can be a beautiful month in southern New Jersey, so Max and "Piney" took a drive to Long Beach Island on a warm Saturday afternoon. He got to see Ol' Barney at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. After that, we went to Loveladies, a small town on the Island, where he made more friends!
Here he is with a friendly fisherman!
After a long day, Max konked out with his pal, Alex d'Catt (the black furry blob) on "Max's couch"!

Hey - where did your nose go???
Here's Max in 2006 at 10 1/2 years old. He couldn't quite figure out what happened to the noses of these handsome Pekinese he met at Wells Mills Park!

After a long and happy life, Maxwell went to eternal rest at "Rainbow Bridge" on November 17, 2007. He was almost twelve years old when he died peacefully in my arms. Maxie touched many hearts with his kind and gentle soul; he will always be remembered and loved by all, but most of all by me. I will miss you very much, Maxie-boy!

UPDATE - February 1, 2008!

I visited GREYHOUND ANGELS Adoption in Pennsauken NJ and met ISAAC! This wonderful boy will soon be part of my family - I'm counting the days!

Lisa and her Dad Ira should be blessed for the endless hours they devote to their greyhounds, arranging for transportation to their kennel - from Florida, Kansas, West Virginia and more, caring for these wonderful animals, arranging adoptions - the work is borne of love, but it's hard work. Their many volunteers also are "Angels", giving of their time to help these wonderful dogs find their "forever homes!"

Greyhound Angels is raising money for a "real" greyhound farm, with a place for these kids to run, instead of being indoors, requiring walks several times daily for exercise (again - thanks to those volunteer ANGELS!)

If you possibly can, go to their website and donate a few dollars. Before you decide how much, take a look at their "ADOPT ME" page!

If you live in the NJ - PA area, visit Greyhound Angels Adoption, located in Pennsauken NJ. Even if you can't adopt at this time, you can sponsor one of their "kids!"

Think about adopting a greyhound - thousands die needlessly every year, and they are wonderful dogs - quiet, sensitive "couch potatoes". They have so much love to give and ask little in return. They are gentle, kind and clean, and their manners are better than those of some people! They require little maintenance - even if you don't have a fenced-in yard, a brisk walk will keep them happy. There are greyhounds right now at racetracks across the country that will be "put to sleep" needlessly! Help him or her...please? Wherever you are, there are agencies that are looking for loving families for these wonderful dogs - find one and adopt your "best friend". You won't regret it!
